Antique Historicist medallion with bird motif and ruby eyes—circa 1870–80
An extraordinary piece of jewelry from the second half of the 19th century:
This magnificent medallion, measuring over 8 cm in diameter, was created around 1878/80 during the Historicist period and
was elaborately crafted from 585 gold.
With its impressive size and exceptionally detailed design, it is far more than a classic pendant—
it is a prestigious statement piece of high collector’s value.
The front captivates with its exceptionally three-dimensional and intricate goldsmithing.
Various shades of gold, finely crafted leaves, delicate volutes, small pearl inlays, and
ornamental elements that appear to move lend the medallion an extraordinary sense of depth.
At the center is an artfully sculpted bird within a golden ring,
whose eyes are set with a small ruby .
The naturalistic depiction and rich ornamentation are characteristic of the opulent
design language of Historicism.
Particularly charming is the original function of the piece:
on the back is a medallion compartment with a glass window that opens.
Behind it, a personal photograph or a small keepsake image can be stored.
In this way, the piece of jewelry combines its representative appeal with the very personal,
sentimental significance that medallions often held in the 19th century.
With a total length, including the loop, of approximately 8.2 cm and a maximum width of about 3.8 cm,
, the pendant has an impressive presence.
Worn on a wide velvet cord, it exudes an almost museum-like aura and
brings the aesthetics of the late 19th century back to life in a particularly striking way.
An additional special feature is the preserved original leather case with velvet lining.
The combination of its extraordinary size, intricate goldsmithing,
a functional medallion design, and the original historical case makes this piece of jewelry today
an exceptionally rare find today.
An exceptional collector’s item from the Historicist periodthat fascinates equally as wearable antique jewelry
and as a historical work of art.
