Antique, exquisitely delicate shell cameo earrings featuring Bacchantes, circa 1870/1880:

An exceptionally beautiful pair of antiqueshell cameo earrings dating from around 1870/1880,

which are particularly striking due to the remarkably three-dimensional and highly detailed craftsmanship of the two cameos.

Iwarm-toned settings made of 750 yellow gold , the finely cut shell cameos each depict the

side profile of a Bacchante. The two heads are crafted as a matching pair and facing each other –

a charming detail that lends the earrings a particularly harmonious effect.

The Bacchantes are depicted with extraordinary care.

Their elaborately arranged hair is framed by lush vine leaves and botanical elements .

Particularly striking is the strong three-dimensionality of the carving:

Facial features, strands of hair, and leaves stand out clearly against the warm, naturally brownish background of the shell and

lend the depictions an almost sculptural depth.

The subtle gradations of the relief attest to the craftsmanship of the cameo carver.
